A brief skirmish erupted on the quiet plains of the reserve when a baboon, lagging behind the main troop, foraged too close to a small herd of bontebok.  It came within close range of a doe with a young buck.  In a flash the protective male bontebok rushed in with horns cocked to chase off the interloper.   The baboon, a young female eluded the feisty thrust of horn, and went bellowing off after her troop.   Assertion of territorial dominance and protection of offspring: put that in the context of baboons intruding into residential homes and one can understand the conflict between man and animal.
