Baboons have excellent acuity of senses.  Lite a barbecue fire and it’s like the gong sounding for a family meal.   Within weeks of Manuel, “The new Kid on the Block” arriving in the territory of the Smits troop, he discovered the fruity delights of  a spaanspek melon, supplied courtesy of a fisherman at Millers Point.  Now who can blame this smart creature for investigating his new environment for such delicious and nutritious fare?  Three months on and he had become a bold and superb opportunistic ‘raider’….. but why not when lunch is laid on so openly and invitingly in the picnic spaces?
